What can we do when a pet dies at home?

The death of a pet at home can cause a situation of confusion. Often when a pet dies at home it happens unexpectedly and we do not know how to act.
On other occasions, families who sense the final moment may choose to have their pet die at home, scheduling an euthanasia so that the moment is more intimate and serene for the whole family.

Scheduled euthanasia at home

This is an increasingly frequent option for animals that are at the end of their life cycle, due to age or a long irreversible illness, and in this way avoid suffering. It allows euthanasia to be carried out at home, in a familiar environment and in the company of the family.

In these cases it is advisable to have everything planned, both the euthanasia and the collection. Most of the times it is the same veterinarian who will help you with the arrangements for the collection.

The unexpected death of the dog at home

A more difficult and hard situation to deal with is the death of a pet at home unexpectedly, accidentally or for other reasons. The trauma of sudden death is added to the confusion of not knowing how to act. In these cases, questions come up such as: Should I consult the vet? What I have to do with the pet's body? What happens if it is a holiday?

The collection procedures

1. Collection of the body

The possibilities are:

  • The family themselves can take the body to the veterinary centre, who will take care of the arrangements.
  • Contact with Tanatori de Mascotes who will take care of all the arrangements. The collection service will be carried out according to the timetable agreed with the family, within the opening hours (Monday to Sunday from 9:00h to 20:00h). On public holidays there is an emergency service.

2. Incineration process

At the time of collection it is important to be clear about the type of cremation chosen.

Individual cremation

Cremation is carried out individually and the ashes are delivered in a standard urn or the urn chosen by the owner from our catalogue. The urn with the ashes is delivered to the owner together with the individual cremation certificate.

Individual Cremation in person

Owners, by reserving a day and time, can attend the incineration process of their pet in order to say goodbye. Once the cremation process has finished (between 2 and 3 hours depending on the size) the owners can collect the ashes  in the urn they have previously chosen.

Collective cremation

Cremation is carried out jointly with other pets and the owner does not recover the ashes.
